Civic Holiday is the name given to the public holiday declared by the provincial government in Ontario. The holiday may be known by a variety of names in different municipalities, including Simcoe Day in Toronto and Colonel By Day in Ottawa. "Civic Holiday" is the only name that is universally recognized by all Ontarians. The August holiday falls on the first Monday in August. It is generally a low-key celebration of John Graves Simcoe, who was the first Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario (which was then known as Upper Canada).
