Girdwood is located just 40 miles south of Anchorage. It started as a ski resort in the 1950s and now offers recreational opportunities year-round.
Numerous trails in the area are available for hiking and mountain biking. Trails range from easy to strenuous. For those looking for a more leisurely activity, the area is popular for berry picking as well. Alyeska Resort's tramway takes visitors up to the 2,300 foot point on Mount Alyeska. The trip affords spectacular views of wildlife, mountain ranges and of course, glaciers.
