Flagstaff
Arizona
Surrounded by Breathtaking Scenery
Flagstaff is located in Coconino County, along with the Grand Canyon. Other attractions include the Wupatki and Sunset Crater Volcano national monuments, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater and the San Francisco Peaks.
It is believed the town got its name from a single pine tree in an open valley. The tree had been stripped of its branches and used as a flagstaff for a July 4th celebration in 1876. Afterward it served as a landmark for travelers headed for the West Coast.
Take in the Views
Heading south, State Route 89A provides a 54-mile long scenic stretch of roadway winding through Owl Creek Canyon. This is a steep, narrow route, however, and pulling trailers more than 20feet long is discouraged.
Schultz Pass Road is another scenic route. This dirt road takes you through the pass between the San Francisco Peaks and the Elden Mountains, heading north off of U.S. Highway 180 to U.S. Highway 89.
If you want to see even more of this beautiful land, take the chairlift at Snow Bowl up to 11,500 feet. The 6,450-foot long ride provides spectacular views of northern Arizona. If you feel like a little exercise while up on top, a hike will lead to views of the Grand Canyon as well.
Area Attractions
The longest reaching views of all can be found at the Lowell Observatory. Founded in 1894 by scientist Percival Lowell, the observatory has been the location of some of the best-known discoveries, including observations about Mars, the basis for the theory of the expanding universe, and the discovery of Pluto. The observatory is still operational and has eight telescopes, including the 24-inch Clark refracting telescope. Tours are available and include many interactive exhibits.
The Museum of Northern Arizona gives visitors a look at the many aspects that make up this region. Displays include information on the area's anthropology, archeology, biology, ethnology, geology and fine arts. One of the main attractions is a kiva or circular meeting place and ceremonial room that has been reproduced as part of the exhibits about native inhabitants.
In July, the Flagstaff Festival of the Arts features a variety of musical entertainment, including jazz, pop, orchestral presentations and chamber music.
