Lakes and Mountains

Kamloops, incorporated in 1893, is located in the heart of the high country. Its name came from a Shuswap Indian word meaning "meeting place." Surrounded by lakes and mountains and only two hours from Vancouver, this is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Located at a point where the North and South Thompson rivers meet, the sage covered hillsides, quiet lakes and dramatic mountains are the perfect setting for a wide range of activities.

Enjoy Nature

A mountain bikers paradise, the area is full of never ending single-track trails, high-speed chute runs, technical descents and spectacular scenery. It is said to have the best single-track and high-speed downhills in the region. There is a trail to suit all abilities from the casual to avid biker.

Make sure to have a full water bottle and a patch kit though. The dry climate, record temperatures and prickly vegetation can make them a necessity. Many of the numerous biking trails are excellent for hiking too.

Kamloops also boasts Canada's only municipal mountain bike park, also known as the Kamloops Bike Ranch. The ranch is one of the most technically advanced bike parks on the continent, attracting cycling experts worldwide.

With an abundance of lakes and rivers in the area, there is no lack of water activities. Water-skiing, windsurfing, rafting and fishing can be easily found. The hundreds of lakes and rivers provide fishing opportunities on private and public waters. There are numerous guide services available in this breath taking region.

Kamloops is home to six 18-hole golf courses, all within 15 minutes of downtown. Some of the most notable are the Rivershore Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and the Aberdeen Hills Golf Links, which sits high up in the hills looking down on the city.

It also is home to the only not-for-profit zoological facility in British Columbia, Kamloops Wildlife Park. The park houses 65 species of B.C. wildlife and endangered species in natural habitats, including grizzly bears, timber wolves and a Siberian tiger.

Culture Abounds

There is no lack of cultural in Kamloops.

The Secwepemc Native Heritage Park affords visitors a look at the culture of the Shuswap Indians, Kamloops' native people.

The Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, the Western Canada Theatre Company, Kamloops Art Gallery and the Kamloops Museum provide a variety of entertainment all summer long.

Many events fill the summer months as well, including the Alpine Blossom Festival and Cattle Drive.

A collection of unique boutiques and sidewalk cafes offer something to suit most everyone's tastes.
