An Abundance of Opportunities

Smithers, at the base of Hudson Bay Mountain, offers a wide variety of recreational activities. Fishing, hiking, mountain climbing and trail riding can all be found here. The Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park offers visitors a unique look into the past, with guided tours through ancient lava beds containing fossilized plants, insects, birds, and fish.

Visit the Babine Mountain Provincial Park for stunning views of alpine lakes and streams, all fed by the Kathyln Glacier, 5000 ft above! The Babine Mountains offer some of the best hiking in British Columbia with trails leading to the spectacular Twin Falls and Glacier Gulch, where the glacier carved a 2 kilometer wide gorge into Hudson Bay Mountain. Mountain bikers, horseback riders, and campers are also welcome on the Park's numerous trails.

Guided rafting tours give a thrilling experience to any visitor, while offering stunning views of the Northern landscape and diverse wildlife. Tours vary from half-day trips to weeklong treks, making it easy to fit shooting the rapids into any travel itinerary.

Finest Salmon Fishing

Located on the banks of the Skeena River, Terrace presents a wealth of recreational activities. Nearby lakes and rivers offer great fishing opportunities. Anglers will be delighted that more salmon and steelhead are caught in the Skeena River and its tributaries than any other place in the world. Terrace can easily lay claim to the title of the best salmon fishing destination on the West Coast. Lakelse River, a tributary of the Skeena River that has record-size salmon, is sure to challenge those of all abilities. In August, Williams Creek is teeming with spawning sockeye, an exciting sight for spectators and fishermen alike.

Wilderness and Wildlife

This is a wonderful place for those wishing to glimpse wildlife. A rare species of black bear, the white Kermode, is native to the Terrace area and still plays a large role in First Nations' mythology where it is known and revered as the 'Spirit Bear'. The same temperate rainforest that the Kermode inhabits also houses deer, wolves, moose, grizzly bears, salmon, and thousands of birds and insects.

Mount Layton Hot Springs, only 12 miles south of Terrace, is a great place to relax after a long day of vigorous activity.
