Vineyards Dot the Landscape
Oliver is located at the northern tip of the Sonora Desert, the southern gateway to the beautiful Okanagan Valley. The unique landscape lends itself to views of rows on rows of grape vines, orchard trees and miles of desert sand.
The dry, mild climate is perfect for raising grapes, and with the help of irrigation, numerous vineyards and orchards dot the landscape. With all those grapes, you can image this region is known for its great wine. Tours and wine tastings are available at various vineyards throughout the area.
Fun in the Okanagan Sun
Recreational opportunities abound here as well. There are many places to hike and bike, including a paved trail that runs along the Similkameen River.
The International Bicycling & Hiking Trail meanders for 18.4 km through the valley, following the Okanagan River, offers access to local wineries and vineyards and is open to cyclists, joggers, and horseback riders alike.
Visit the Vaseux Lake Provincial Park, an area famous for it's bighorn sheep and fantastic bird-watching, and hike to view the fascinating Native pictographs that adorn some of the canyon walls. Fishing and camping are also popular and quite accessible throughout the park, so don't hesitate to pack the tent and some bait.
Vaseux and Tuc-El-Nuit Lakes are perfect getaways for kayakers, swimmers, and canoes. Enjoy a beautiful desert sunrise as you paddle away.
Golfing is popular as well in Oliver with two top-notch resorts just 10 minutes away from the centre of town. Whether you hit the greens at the Inkameep Canyon Desert or Fairview Mountain Golf Course, you're sure to have a memorable experience.
