History and Beauty

Fernie, located in the heart of the Elk Valley, was founded in 1898 as a coal mining town. On its historical main street, much of the architecture dates to the late Victorian and Edwardian era. Most of the buildings were constructed of red and yellowbrick, sandstone or stone after a big fire in 1908.

Outdoor Fun

Great terrain for mountain biking can be found all over this area. Whether it's steep technical single-track or an easy cruise on a logging road you're looking for, this is the place. Take the "Growin' Old" trail in Cedar Valley and ride through a 1,000-year-old forest of towering cedars.

Hikers will enjoy the variety of trails too. A local guide book, Rumours, Routes and Rapids, lists 77 different hikes ranging in difficulty from an easy stroll to a strenuous climb. All afford stunning scenery and breathtaking views.

Rafting, tubing and kayaking are popular summertime activities on the Elk River. Fishing on the Elk is also very popular, thanks to the river's native Cutthroat trout ranging from 14 to 18 inches. They say its designation as a catch-and-release river has created world-class dry-fly action for West Slope "Cutties". The Bull River offers its share of excitement too. Lake fishing is great here as well, with many stocked with Eastern Brook, Blackwater Rainbows or West Slope cutthroat trout.

Cultural Interests

Fernie has its share of arts and entertainment as well. Fernie Arts Station, an old railway station, is now the town's cultural hub. Musicians, theatre performers, comedians and artists all show off their talents here. Local specialty shops and galleries offer visitors a wide variety of choices as do the more than 20 restaurants.
