Revelstoke
British Columbia
Majestic Mountains and Sparkling Streams
Revelstoke, located on the Columbia River, has a rich history to accompany its spectacular scenery.
Originally named Farwell in 1884, the railway requested the name be changed in honor of Lord Revelstoke (Edward Charles Baring). He was head of the London banking firm that advanced money to save the Canadian Pacific Railway, allowing it to complete the transcontinental line.
As many as 60 heritage buildings from the Victorian era are still standing. A walking tour of the historic restoration of the downtown area is available at the Revelstoke Museum.
Parks and Paradise
Tucked between the Selkirk and the Monashee mountains, its breathtaking surroundings have caused Revelstoke to be proclaimed "The Capital of Canada's Alps." And with Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks nearby, the recreational opportunities are endless.
Whether in town or the backwoods, countless trails provide hikers with ample choices. A paved trail system in Revelstoke offers short excursions to fit many time frames. An extensive trail system in Glacier National Park has miles of trails that lead up into the majestic mountains and along crystal-clear rivers. Mountain bikers won't be disappointed either. Revelstoke is quickly becoming the mountain biking capital of BC, so there are trails for all abilities, from challenging single- or double-track to smooth meandering routes. Forestry roads allow for longer trips in beautiful alpine settings.
Some of the best fishing in the province can be found here in the freshwater lakes, streams and rivers. Guided helicopter trips can take you to unexploited high alpine lakes. And don't forget about the Columbia River -- a fishing and rafting paradise.
History and Culture
The Railway Museum depicts Canadian Railway history. It covers the building of the railway itself, the workers and present day operation. One of the main attractions is a restored CPR locomotive built in 1948 for the Revelstoke Division. The MikadoP-2k 2-8-2 gives visitors a great look at the big steam era.
Revelstoke Dam, on the Columbia River, is one of North America's largest and most modern hydroelectric projects. The dam is only minutes from downtown and self-guided tours are available free of charge.
The summer months bring nightly entertainment downtown in Grizzly Plaza. Galleries show the works of local and national artists and unique shops and boutiques offer something for everyone. Dining choices run the full gamut from gourmet to pub fare.
