In the Sierra Nevada Mountains
Bear Valley is surrounded by thick forests, majestic mountains and lush meadows here in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Its proximity to several natural areas makes Bear Valley a perfect destination for recreational endeavors.
The Stanislaus National Forest offers incredible opportunities for outdoor activities. Wide ranges of trails await hikers and mountain bikers. From easy to strenuous, gentle to steep, the trails in this region provide something for all endurance levels.
Several campgrounds can be found in the area as well. Any number of lakes and rivers harbor fish just waiting to be caught. The trout-filled streams will please even the most avid fishing enthusiasts.
Calaveras Big Trees State Park is just west of Bear Valley. The Giant Redwood Grove there contains trees more than 2,000 years old. And, the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is only a short distance to the east and Yosemite National Park is just a couple hours away.
Welcome Spelunkers and Wine Tasters
Calaveras County is home to three caverns well worth exploring. The largest of the three, which is also the biggest in the state, Moaning Cavern is just west on Highway 4. Gold prospectors discovered the caverns 100 years ago.
The region is known for wine growing too. Several wineries can be found near the neighboring town of Murphys on Highway 4.
