California
In the Sierra Nevada Mountains
Pinecrest, in the central Sierra Nevada Mountains, offers a wide range of outdoor activities.
Located in the Stanislaus National Forest, opportunities for outdoor adventure abound. A wide range of trails awaits hikers and mountain bikers. From easy to strenuous, gentle to steep, the trails in this region provide something for all endurance levels. Several campgrounds can be found in the area as well.
Any number of lakes and rivers harbor fish just waiting to be caught. The trout-filled streams will please even the most avid fishing enthusiasts. Pinecrest Lake Marina also offers fishing as well as water sports, such as sailing and boating.
Calaveras County is home to three caverns well worth exploring. The largest of the three, which is also the biggest in the state, is Moaning Cavern on Highway 4. The caverns were discovered by gold prospectors 100 years ago.
The region is known for wine growing too. Several wineries can be found near the town of Murphys to the west on Highway 4.
Calaveras Big Trees State Park is just west and north. The Giant Redwood Grove there contains trees more than 2,000 years old. And, the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is only a short distance to the East and Yosemite National Park is just a couple hours drive away.
