Yosemite National Park
California
Breathtaking Landscape
Yosemite National Park ranges in elevation from 2,000 to 13,014 feet. This breathtaking landscape was the nation's first state park, formed in 1864. It earned national park status 26 years later. Yosemite encompasses 1,169 square miles of terrain.
Hikers and mountain bikers will enjoy exploring the more than 800 miles of trails. Hikers might want to search out some of the many scenic wonders here.
Upper Yosemite Falls plunges more than 1,400 feet in one fell swoop. That's as much as nine Niagara Falls put together.
The giant sequoia grove and the southern end of the park, Mariposa Grove, features Grizzly Giant -- the oldest tree in the grove. Its diameter reaches 30.7 feet and it appears to touch the sky at an amazing 210 feet. Backpackers can obtain wilderness permits for camping. Pets are not allowed on the trails. A tramway offers tours of the valley for those looking for a different route.
Fishing is allowed in many of the park's lakes and streams, but a California fishing license is required.
The Indian Cultural Museum is close by and offers visitors a glimpse at the history of the Miwok and Paiute.
