Rich With History

Durango, founded in 1881, is rich with southwestern Colorado history. Mesa Verde National Park is only 36 miles to the west. There, abandoned cliff dwellings tell the story of the American Indians who once populated the area.

Travel back in time by taking a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The train winds its way from Durango through the San Juan Mountains to the mining town of Silverton and a gold mine waiting to be explored.

Recreation and Exploration

And there are plenty of places to explore in and around Durango. Miles of marked trails lead through the San Juan Mountains for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding or four-wheeling. If you want to stay on pavement, bike the San Juan Skyway and enjoy spectacular views of majestic mountain peaks and meadows carpeted with wildflowers.

White-water rafting and kayaking on the Animas River provide a cool way to spend a summer day. Or try fishing in one of the nearby lakes and streams.

For the ultimate thrill, take a spin down Purgatory's Alpine Slide. From June to September, you can wind your way down the mountain side on this exciting ride. After the ride, stop and soak in Trimble Hot Springs just six miles north of Durango on U.S. Highway 550.

Entertainment and Dining

Theater, rodeos, and festivals throughout the summer present visitors with an ample variety of entertainment. And numerous shops and restaurants offer an assortment that is sure to please all.
