Scenic Forests and Historic Bridges

Cornwall, incorporated in 1740, is located in northwest Connecticut between the Mohawk and Housatonic state forests. This scenic area is a popular summer destination.

Only a few miles up the road is one of only two remaining covered bridges in Connecticut. The West Cornwall Covered Bridge, built in 1864, spans the Housatonic River at West Cornwall. The redbridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Outdoor Adventure

Nearby, Mohawk Mountain State Park covers 259 acres and offers picnicking and hiking, including the Mohawk Trail. The trail is one of the state's blue-blazed hiking trails and connects with the Appalachian Trail in Falls Village and Sharon. Mohawk Mountain State Forest has opportunities for fishing as well as hiking.

The Housatonic River provides some of the best trout fishing in the East. Several pull-offs make these challenging waters easily accessible. Housatonic Meadows State Forest and Housatonic Meadows State Park together offer fishing, hiking, picnicking, canoeing and camping.

Bicyclists will find a host of back roads and quaint towns to explore in the county. The ride along Route 128 from West Cornwall to Route 4 and on toward Torrington and then up Route272 to Norfolk is recommended in Steve Lyons' book, "TheBicyclist's Guide to the Southern Berkshires." Several other routes in Litchfield County are recommended as well.

The area has a number of events to entertain summertime visitors. The Memorial Day Craftsman's Weekend and the Annual Covered Bridge Dance in West Cornwall, and the Memorial Day Parade and Fair in Cornwall are just a few examples of what the region has to offer.
