Kellogg
Idaho
Rich History and Scenic Beauty

The historic town of Kellogg has a rich mining past. Located in Silver Valley, the site of one of the richest mineral deposits in the world, the town was named after Noah Kellogg. He discovered the largest silver strike of all. Kellogg gave the credit to his mule, Jenny, however, saying she found the load when she wandered off during the night.

It has been said that miners pulled a billion ounces of silver from these hills that are home to the Sunshine Silver mine, the largest in the United States. The area is also home to the famous Bunker Hill mine.

In 1990, the city gave itself a makeover and re-decorated the downtown as a Bavarian village. Trolleys carry visitors to the main street, which is built on a hillside.

For a longer ride, take the world's longest gondola at the Silver Mountain Ski and Summer Resort just south of Kellogg. The 20-minute ride covers more than three miles and rises nearly 6,000 feet in elevation.

Trails, Trails, Trails

About 30 miles south of Kellogg is the Hiawatha Rail-Trail. The route was originally constructed in the early 1900s by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad Co. In 1977, the line went bankrupt. The route is in the process of being converted into a world-class mountain biking and hiking destination. The first phase, the Idaho segment, opened in 1998.

Many other routes for hiking and mountain biking exist here as well. There are more than 50 miles of trails. Hike along a river or up a mountain. There is something geared toward all abilities. Ride the gondola up the mountain and bike or hike down.

Chairlift rides also are available to the top of Kellogg Peak. From this 6,300-foot mountain, gaze out on panoramic views of the Bitterroot Mountain Range. It is said you can see three states and Canada.

Golfing and fishing also are popular pastimes here.

Entertainment

Exciting events during the summer months add to the town's flavor. The First Security Country Concert Series at Silver Mountain and Silver Hoops "S on S" are just a sampling of what the area has to offer visitors.
