Boise
Idaho
"The City of Trees"

Boise, a name meaning "wooded" chosen by French-Canadian trappers, is Idaho's state capital. It was founded in 1836, a year after the gold rush reached Boise Basin. Sometimes called the "City of Trees," Boise is a wonderful mix of recreational and cultural opportunities.

National Forests and Parks

Located at the southwest end of the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Route, State Route 21, the city is only minutes away from the Boise National Forest. Here hikers, mountain bikers and campers will find a variety of terrain and scenery. Another scenic route can be found north on State Highway 55. The Payette River Scenic Byway travels through the Boise and Payette national forests.

Boise's 55 parks provide ample choices for spending time outdoors. Along the Boise River is a 25-mile greenbelt. Whether on foot, bicycle or skates, this is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the city. Take in the wildlife, such as ducks, eagles, otter and beaver. Fly fish within view of high-rise office buildings.

Several nearby lakes and rivers afford great fishing and watersports. The Payette River, north of town, offers rafting, kayaking and canoeing.

Golfers will find variety and challenge in the 11 golf courses in town as well as the several others in the region.

The restored downtown with brick streets and sidewalk pubs is the perfect setting for Boise's many cultural endeavors. The Idaho Botanical Garden, Idaho State Historical Museum and Boise Art Museum provide visitors with a variety of information and entertainment. Zoo Boise has an interesting collection of exotic animals.

Dining, Culture and Entertainment

Summer is the time for outdoor festivals. The Boise River Festival, the Basque Festival and Alive After Five, a series of free concerts, will give visitors a taste of what the city has to offer.

Dining choices range from casual to elegant and everything from Egyptian to Japanese fair can be found.

Another interesting aspect to Boise is an area right in the city with a character all its own. Chinese miners settled in the Garden City area after the gold rush. They planted the gardens from which it now takes its name.
