Deep Creek Lake
Maryland
The State's Largest Freshwater Lake
Deep Creek Lake is the state's largest fresh water lake, covering almost 3,900 acres. Deep Creek Lake is one of Garrett County's main attractions and offers boating, swimming, fishing and camping.
Bicyclers will find hundreds of miles of trails running through this rolling terrain. Rides range from easy to strenuous. The county says it is biker friendly because the State Highway Administration has put in 10-foot shoulders on many of the main roads in the area and maintains those shoulders.
Mountain bikers also can enjoy their sport at Wisp Ski & Golf Resort. The chair lift takes riders up top, and practice areas are available for those new to the sport.
Hikers will find endless opportunities as well. Garrett County includes 70,000 acres of public land with miles and miles of trails to explore. Savage River State Forest and several state parks are within an easy drive from McHenry and offer countless trails through some spectacular scenery.
Enjoy the Waters
Besides the excellent fishing in Deep Creek Lake, many other waterways provide ample opportunities to catch trout. Brown, rainbow and brook trout can be found in numerous streams in the area, many of them well-stocked. Other fish to look for are crappie, large mouth bass, walleye and chain pickerel.
Rafting is available on the Upper Youghiogheny. The county is known for its wild waters that challenge rafters and kayakersalike. Experience class IV and V rapids through a steep narrow gorge.
Golfers will find two 18-hole championship courses to enjoy. The Golf Club at Wisp was ranked as one of the top 10 in the state. The Oakland Golf Club is host to the annual Western Maryland Men's Amateur Golf Championships.
Summertime means fun and Garrett County is no exception. One of the main events is the McHenry Highland Festival in June. Hear bagpipe bands, see Scottish country and highland dancers, athletic and piping competitions and get a real taste of Scotland from the Scottish shops and food.
