Mars Hill - Aroostook County
Maine
Vast Open Spaces
Mars Hill is located in Aroostook County, Maine's northern most county. The area has a history in logging, an industry that brought great wealth to many. Several imposing mansions still remain to attest to these gains.
Ashland, just west of Mars Hill, has an open-air museum that allows visitors a look at the life and lore of the lumber barons and lumberjacks of the past.
Enjoy the Countryside
The county's vast open spaces have attracted outdoors fans for decades. Fishing, camping and hunting are especially popular in the 6,400 square miles of fields, forests and waterways. Numerous wilderness experiences await.
More than 2,000 lakes, streams, rivers and ponds offer ample opportunities for fishing, kayaking and rafting. The county's most famous stretch of water is the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. This 92-mile long chain of lakes, streams, rivers and ponds wind across 200 acres northward to Allagash to merge with the St. John River.
If water is not for you, try some of the many other activities, such as golf, hiking, camping and horseback riding.
Aroostook State Park, a few miles to the northwest, offers hiking, camping and swimming.
Nearby Houlton, the commercial center for southern Aroostook, offers many exciting warm weather activities, including the Fourth of July Agricultural Fair, a canoe race and, in August, the Potato Feast.
