Moosehead Lake
Maine
Vast Unspoiled Wilderness
The Moosehead Lake region is right in the middle of Maine's vast unspoiled wilderness. The lake covers an area 40 miles long by 10 miles wide. The region lends itself easily to a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and canoeing.
Mount Kineo, a historic American Indian gathering place, rises sharply from the lake to reach a height of 700 feet. This island, only about a mile from the heavily forested shore, can be reached by a number of cruises and a shuttle service. Today visitors to Mount Kineo will find hiking trails and a pebble beach.
For a scenic view of the lake and its surroundings, try a ride on the SS Katahdin, a restored steam vessel. "Kate," as the locals know her, also is the floating Moosehead Marine Museum. The ship carries artifacts and photographs of logging and steamboat operations from days gone by.
Fun All Around
Lily Bay State Park, on the southeastern shores of Moosehead Lake, offers a variety of activities, including fishing, swimming, boating, camping and picnicking.
The town of Greenville, at the very southern tip of the lake is one of the primary recreational centers for the region.
And about 10 miles to the east, hikers can get a look at the "Grand Canyon of the East," Gulf Hagas. This breathtaking canyon is accessible only by foot. Five major waterfalls, sheer walls and unusual rock formations highlight the three-mile long slate canyon. This section of the West Branch of the Pleasant River is located just north of Milo and Brownville.
