Historic Buildings and Quaint Brick Sidewalks

Bangor is a rejuvenated town located on the west bank of the Penobscot River. The city first found greatness in the 1840's during the logging boom as the second largest lumbering port in the country.

Today visitors will find quaint brick sidewalks connecting historic buildings, unique boutiques and a variety of dining establishments. Timber products still play a large role in the economy, as do electronics and tourism.

This fascinating town is host to a number of recreational activities, including golf, fishing, canoeing, sailing and sightseeing.

The Penobscot River is known for its excellent salmon fishing opportunities. In fact, just across the river in the town of Brewer, each spring the first salmon caught is sent to the president at the White House.

A Look at the Past

A visit to the Cole Land Transportation Museum gives a unique look into Maine's past with more than 200 antique Maine vehicles, including wagons, locomotives and logging trucks, and more than 2,000 photographs of life in early communities. A collection of military vehicles and uniforms starting with the Civil War and going all the way to Desert Storm also is included in the museum's exhibits.

Several events draw visitors from all around to this unique town on the Penobscot River. A canoe race that begins in Kenduskeag and ends in Bangor is a springtime favorite as is the annual Bangor State Fair in Bass Park.
