Androscoggin County is an important area for industry and recreation. The twin cities of Auburn and Lewiston, located on the Androscoggin River 30 miles inland, combine to form the second largest commercial center in the state.

Auburn made its name producing shoes in the 1840s and 1850s. The town harnessed the power of the river in the 1850s, which made it prime for industrial growth. Lewiston, located across the river, followed suit by developing into a major textile center in the mid to late 1800s.
