The Shores of Lake Michigan
Southwestern Michigan offers a unique mix of history, agriculture and Great Lakes shoreline.
A visit to the Langley Covered Bridge, three miles north of Centreville, gives visitors a glimpse into the past when builders enclosed their bridges to protect them from the elements and therefore make them last longer. This bridge is a testimony that the design worked. Built in 1887, this is the longest covered bridge in Michigan, stretching 282 feet across the St. Joseph River.
Productive Fruits
Wineries can be found throughout Michigan and this region is no exception. Nearby in Paw Paw is the state's oldest and largest vintner, the St. Julian Winery. The winery produces 36 varieties and offers tours of its facilities.
Paw Paw also is home to Warner Vineyards, which is housed in the city's 1898 water works building. They claim to have the only champagne cave in the Midwest. In the cave the drink ferments in classic French style. Tours are available of the Warner facility as well.
Grapes aren't the only fruit of importance in the region. Apple orchards, such as Wicks Orchard seven miles north of Dowagiac, are a big draw to visitors. You can't pick your own, but you can select what you like from the huge Apple House. The orchard also has a cider press, cafe, bakery and gift shop.
Fun in the Sun
A trip west to the shores of Lake Michigan offers a wide array of activities. Warren Dunes State Park, just south of St. Joseph, offers swimming, hiking, camping and picnicking. The park encompasses 1,950 acres on the lake.
Several other state parks are in the area, including Grand Mere, VanBuren and Kal-Haven Trail Sesqui centennial, and provide for a host of activities. St. Joseph has many wonderful and unique shops to visit and a variety of beaches and parks.
