Duluth
Minnesota
At the Tip of Lake Superior
Duluth is located at the tip of Lake Superior in northwestern Minnesota. The settlement was not permanently established until 1852, but it was in 1679 that French explorer Daniel de Greysolon, Sieur du Luth first landed on the shore of Minnesota Point.
Duluth has a history of mining and timber and is a major inland port. This city is a wonderful mix of culture, history and nature.
As you might imagine, one of Duluth's biggest attractions is its waterfront. The Lake walk provides miles of walking, jogging, bicycling or skating. Bay front Park, the Rose Garden and, of course, Lake Superior itself are some of the other things you won't want to miss.
The city has more than 60 parks, 11,000 acres of open and wooded land and 25 miles of hiking paths. The Willard Munger State Trail is available to bicyclers and skaters. This paved route provides a traffic-free way of getting around. Several other trails, including the Park Point Trail and the Western Waterfront Trail exist as well.
Hikers will find a lot of ground to cover and a variety of terrain. The Superior Hiking Trail is one of the most rugged and picturesque trails in the Midwest. More than 200 miles of trail covers pine groves, waterfalls and valleys. Camping areas area available as are cozy resorts.
A Glimpse of History
The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center portrays the history of Lake Superior shipping and the Army Corp of Engineers. Life-size replicas of ship's cabins, an operating steam engine and models of ships are on display, along with various science exhibits.
If you truly want to step back in time to get a glimpse of the city's history, take a walking tour of "Old Downtown" with Dr.Thomas Preston Foster, a famous Duluth pioneer. Foster is portrayed well by a local actor.
A wide variety of events light up the summer to entertain and delight all ages. The Annual Grandma's Marathon, the Annual Bayfront Blues Festival and Fourth Fest are just a few of the exciting happening here.
