Numerous Lakes

Mankato is located at the confluence of the Minnesota and the Blue Earth rivers. The name, Mankato, is a Dakota word meaning "blue earth" and refers to the clay lining the riverbanks. The area offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities.

Minneopa State Park is just three miles to the west and encompasses 1,145 acres. Some of the parks most distinguishing features are a deep gorge with two large waterfalls and a 1864 gristmill.

Sibley Park covers 100 wooded acres next to where the Blue Earth and Minnesota rivers join. The park features a petting zoo, botanical garden and picnic grounds.

Numerous lakes are located in the area and offer a variety of activities, including fishing, swimming, boating and canoeing. Many camp grounds are available as well.

History and Entertainment

Visitors wanting to learn about some of the region's history can go to the R.D. Hubbard House and Carriage House. The house was built in 1871 and is the oldest example of a 19th-century mansion in the area. The carriage house has a collection of horse-drawn vehicles and antique automobiles. Both buildings are surrounded by Victorian gardens.

Summertime events are popular here and draw visitors from all around. The People's Fair, North Mankato Fun Days and the Mankato Area Art and Music Festival are just a few of the exciting events happening here
