St. Louis
Missouri
The Gateway to the West
St. Louis may be best known for its famous Gateway Arch, but there is no end to the things to see and do here. This spot, high on a bluff next to the Mississippi River, was chosen by French fur traders. The location was prefect, with its direct route to New Orleans and surround by country side teaming with fur-bearing critters.
The arch is, of course, a must see for most visitors. It stretches 630 feet into the air, marking what was once the gateway to the West for many pioneers. The site it self is that of the home and trading post of Pierre de Laclede, the man who first picked this spot in 1764.
Numerous museums dot the city and fulfill a wide variety of interests. The Dog Museum, Magic House - St. Louis Children's Museum, the National Bowling Hall of Fame Museum and the Official St. Louis Cardinals Museum are only some of the fascinating places you can visit.
Outdoor Enjoyment
For those wishing to spend more time outside, golfing, horseback riding, tennis, in-line skating and bicycling can all be enjoyed in and around this historic city.
For some real thrills, try a visit to Six Flags Over Mid-American nearby Eureka. The amusement park offers more than 100 rides, shows and attractions.
Dining options run the full gamut from casual to elegant. Italian cooking is a specialty, especially on the "Hill" in south St.Louis. This Italian neighborhood is only one of many ethnic areas within the city that offer delicious dishes.
