Big Sky / Moonlight Basin
Montana
Surrounded by Gallatin National Forest
The Mountain and Meadow Villages of Big Sky are surrounded by the Gallatin National Forest, and Yellowstone National Park is only 18 miles away. The area has a rich western history that includes Nevada City, Virginia City and the Lewis and Clark Caverns.
Big Sky Resort was originally developed by newsman Chet Huntley. During the summer the area offers hiking, biking, rafting, fishing, tennis and golf. Mountain bikers will find plenty of backcountry to peddle through. There are miles of trails and forest service and ski area roads to explore, including a route leading up and down the mountain. Ride up and take the gondola down or vice versa.
Hikers will find just as many trails in the area. Take the gondola up the mountain to take in the spectacular views and hike down.
Rafters can take a trip down the Gallatin River through Gallatin Canyon. This is the same breathtaking river that was filmed for the movie "A River Runs Through It." The Madison River takes rafters through Beartrap Canyon Wilderness.
Along the West Fork of the Gallatin River, golfers can try their hand at the 18-hole, par 72 course, originally designed by Arnold Palmer. This course sits 6,500 feet above sea level and offers challenges for golfers of all skill levels.
Art fairs, musical concerts and theater productions give visitors a taste of the region's culture.
