Peaks Reaching Over 10,000Feet
Anaconda is located just west of Butte, near Dearlodge National Forest. Now serving as the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Seat, the town was once chosen because of its location as the site for a large copper smelter.
Anaconda was surrounded by one of the world's richest mineral deposits and had plenty of available water, making it perfect for the smelter. It has been closed for some time now and all that is left is its 585-foot tall smokestack. It is still one of the world's tallest freestanding brick structures.
This beautiful mountainous area in the southwestern part of the state boasts local peaks reaching 10,379 feet and the Continental Divide is just nine miles away.
A popular area for fishing, five species of trout can be found as well as the rare arctic grayling. Boating and fishing can be found at Echo Lake, Georgetown Lake, Silver Lake, Warm Springs Creek and Big Hole River.
Hike and camp at Lost Creek State Park and Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area. Both are excellent areas for wild life viewing. Look for elk, Rocky Mountain Goats and Bighorn Sheep.
