History and Beauty

Corner Brook is located on the southern shore of the Humber Arm of the Bay of Islands. In 1767, explorer Captain James Cook mapped the bay all the way up to the site of the current city.

The path he followed is now a scenic route from Corner Brook west to the coast. Cook, a British navigator and world explorer, surveyed more than 3,600 kilometers of Newfoundland coastline.

The city is a busy industrial center. The first inhabitants fished for herring and lobster and later harvested timber, developing a thriving logging industry. The pulp and paper mill established here in 1925 was one of the largest newsprint mills in the world. This encouraged the first organized development of the town. The present city was incorporated in 1956.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, both indoor and outdoor. Exploring nature is easy. Hike and fish in and around the Bay of Islands. A series of trails networks through the area and vary in length and difficulty.

Great Salmon Fishing

Corner Brook is known for some of the best salmon fishing on the Humber River, and many small fishing villages along the coast offer wonderful sightseeing. Fishing, golf, tennis, swimming and boating are available at the city parks. Rock climbers will find plenty to enjoy here as well.

The Arts and Culture Centre offers many cultural endeavors along with the School of Fine Arts and a local theater company. The Stephenville Festival of the Arts is a month-long celebration from mid-July to mid-August where a variety of performances can be seen.

A short trip on the Trans Canada Highway to the Viking Trail leads to Gros Morne National Park. This beautiful park encompasses 1,800 square kilometers on the Great Northern Peninsula. The park's beauty and unique geological features have earned it the status of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hikers will find a variety of terrain to cover. A trip to the top of Gros Morne Mountain yields spectacular views of Ten Mile Pond and the Long Range Mountains. Hike across mantle rock and the Tablelands to experience a 600-meter-high plateau and one of the best examples in the world of exposed rock from the inner earth.
