Sunapee Lake Region
New Hampshire
On Beautiful Sunapee Lake
Mount Sunapee is located on the west side of Sunapee Lake. The area has been a popular vacation destination for more than a century. The name Sunapee is thought to be derived from a Penacook Indian word meaning "wild goose water."
Several recreation areas are nearby, including Mount Sunapee State Park. Just three miles to the south, the park offers a 200-acre network of hiking trails.
Visitors also can ride to the top of 2,743-foot Mount Sunapee on the chairlift. Mountain bikers can take the chairlift to the top of the mountain as well and ride down some fabulous descents. Opportunities for swimming and picnicking also are available.
Boat tours on Sunapee Lake give visitors an all-around look at this picturesque region. Water sporting activities abound, including swimming, sail boarding, canoeing and fishing. Lake visitors also can enjoy picnicking, sunbathing and sightseeing.
A number of events await summer guests. The Flea and Craft Fair at Mount Sunapee State Park and Hillsborough Balloon Festival are only a couple of the exciting happenings this area has to offer.
