Lakes Region
"City of the Lakes"

Laconia was first established as a city in 1893. However, people were first known to be in the area in the 1600s, and the first settlers are thought to have arrived after the French and Indian War in the mid-1700s.

Laconia is located in the Lakes Region and was called the "City of the Lakes" by new settlers. Some of the nearby lakes include Squam Lake, Lake Winnisquam and Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state. Fish, swim, boat, wind surf, kayak and sail on these sparkling waters left by glacial carving.

Outdoor Fun

This region offers an abundance of recreational activities, including tennis, camping and horseback riding. Hikers will find countless miles of trails winding through the wilderness. Belknap Mountain, Gunstock Recreation Area, Red Hill and Mount Major are just some of the popular hiking areas. And the mountain biking center at Gunstock has numerous trails for riders of all skill levels.

Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased to know that there are 26 lakes of 100 acres or more, as well as many ponds and streams in the Lakes Region. Lake Winnipesaukee harbors a variety of fish species, including lake trout, landlocked salmon, small mouth bass and more.

Golfers can try their luck at one of the area courses. Laconia Country Club has an 18-hole, par 72 course. Three 9-hole golf courses also are located within a few miles of Laconia, including the Pheasant Ridge Country Club and Piche's Par 3 in Gilford.

Culture and Entertainment

The Lakes Region has a number of cultural activities as well. The historic Belknap Mill, built in 1823, is known as a center for arts and humanities, and a variety of presentations are offered throughout the year.

Summertime brings a feast of events to the Lakes Region. Arts and crafts shows, outdoor concerts and fireworks provide plenty of excitement. In July and September, the New Hampshire International Speedway hosts the Winston Cup Races.
