Countless Recreational Opportunities

Franconia is located just west of the White Mountain National Forest, off of Interstate 93. This area easily lends itself to a variety of outdoor endeavors.

One of the area's main attractions, however, is the Frost Place, an 1859 farmhouse that was owned by poet Robert Frost. Frost bought the house in 1915 when he returned from England. Visitors can get a good feeling of who Frost was and see many of his works, including autographed first editions of his books. There also is a nature trail on the property and resident poets write and recite poetry for visitors.

Franconia Notch

Just to the south is Franconia Notch, one of the most famous mountain gaps in the East. Located between the Kinsman and Franconia mountain ranges, it has more scenic areas than any other notch in the White Mountains.

Franconia Notch State Park offers countless recreational opportunities. Some popular destinations include the Profile, also known as the Old Man of the Mountains and the Great Stone Face. The 40-foot high head is formed by five different ledges and is located 1,200 feet above Profile Lake.

Just a half-mile north of the Profile is the Cannon Mountain aerial tramway II. The tram makes the 2,022-foot trip up the mountain in just seven-and-a-half minutes. Breathtaking views and several trails wait at the top.

Echo Lake, located at the north end, got its name from the acoustics it has because of the mountains rising on three of its sides. Visitors to the lake will find fishing, boating and swimming.
