"The Soul of the Southwest"

Called "The Soul of the Southwest," Taos has a rich history. Thousands of years ago, nomadic hunter-gathers came through this region, leaving arrowheads and pictographs for future settlers to find. Later, about 900 years ago, the Taos and Picuris Pueblo people moved into their villages.

The Spanish entered the picture next. They fought back and forth with the Pueblo people for control of the area in the 1600s. In the early 1900s, artists discovered the region and made it their home as well.

Several museums depict this fascinating history and cultural mix, and the town's adobe buildings have a unique charm.

The Hacienda Martinez is one of the few remaining Spanish Colonial haciendas open to the public, and the Harwood Museum has a collection showcasing some of Taos' best-known artists.

Fun in the Sun

Golfers will find the area has many courses, each offering its own unique challenges. The Course at Angel Fire is situated in a beautiful high mountain valley and the Taos Country Club winds its way through the sage covered hills of this high mesa desert.

Numerous trails will please hikers and bicyclists alike. Hike 650 feet down into the Rio Grande Gorge or up one of the many mountain trails to above timberline at 11,000 feet. World-class single-track trails lead through the rugged terrain. The 27-mile long South Boundary Trail is a favorite.

Fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout is a popular pastime here. The many mountain streams provide fishing enthusiasts with ample opportunities. Eagle Nest Lake, to the northeast, is known for its trout and salmon. The area's rivers have some excellent rafting. The Taos Box is rated a class IV rapids.

Many other recreational activities can be found here too, including tennis, horseback riding, rock climbing and bird watching.

A number of interesting day trips are available. The Enchanted Circle, a National Forest Scenic Byway, circles Wheeler Peak, the highest in New Mexico at 13,161 feet.

Entertainment and Dining

A variety of events throughout the summer promise to entertain. The Annual Taos Poetry Circus, High Country Tri-cultural Arts and Crafts Fair and the Annual Taos Mountain Balloon Rally are just a few.

A wide selection of unique shops and restaurants offer something for everyone. Dining options range from elegant to casual.
