Santa Fe
New Mexico
"The City Different"
Santa Fe, sometimes called "The City Different," is the capital of New Mexico. It is also the oldest state capital in the United States. The rich history of this town has created a wonderful mix of Native American, Spanish and Anglo cultures. Originally named "The Royal City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi," this historic town celebrated its fourth centennial in 1998.
Besides marking the fourth centennial, the arrival of the first Spanish settlers, 1998 was the anniversary of two other historic events. The "Royal Road," or El Camino Real, was established 400 years ago as well. The route went from Mexico to Santa Fe and later to Taos. And in 1848, the treaty making New Mexico a territory of the United States was signed.
A Mecca for the Arts
The early 20th century saw Santa Fe become a draw for writers and artists from all over. The town's 250 galleries, 70 jewelry shops and countless shows attest to the fact that it still is. A fantastic mix of mediums and styles blend in this city of creativity.
Fine arts are not the only cultural attraction here, however. Santa Fe boasts 12 museums, more than 200 restaurants, and hundreds of theater, dance and musical performances.
Outdoor Endeavors
The area's average of 300 days of sunshine a year make Santa Fe the perfect place for outdoor interests as well. This might explain the hillsides covered with wildflowers and the 30 parks just waiting to be enjoyed.
Golfing is very popular here. Several courses offer a variety of challenges and scenery. The Municipal Recreation Complex has a new 27-hole course, and the course at Cochiti Lake was designed by Robert Trent Jones.
Hikers and mountain bikers will enjoy diving into the more than three million acres of forested public land. Paved roads and backcountry trails offer something for all abilities. Easy to strenuous, gentle to rugged, it's all here. Check out the annual Santa Fe Century, a 100-mile ride.
True excitement can be found in the waters. Rafting, canoeing and kayaking adventures can be had all around. Shoot the rapids of Taos Box or relax and take a float through the Lower Rio Grande Gorge. The most exciting waters run from late May to July, when the level is highest.
The water here offers good fishing for anglers as well. The Pecos River is said to have some of the best fly-fishing in the United States.
Other recreational activities can be found here as well. Forty-four public courts make Santa Fe perfect for tennis lovers. Or try rock climbing, horseback riding or relaxing in the hot springs.
