The Apache Trails Region
Ruidoso is located 191 miles from Albuquerque in south-central New Mexico. Here on the edge of the Lincoln National Forest is what is called the Apache Trails region.
The region encompasses a number of southern New Mexico attractions, the biggest of which is Sierra Blanca. Known as "Baldy" to locals, this mountain peak reaches an impressive height of more than 12,000 feet. It is a sacred spot to the Apache and is visible from hundreds of miles away.
Adventures Await
Many adventures await here. Explore the legend of Billy the Kid or visit the Smokey the Bear Museum and state park. Take a trip to the Three Rivers Petroglyphs National Recreation Area to the west or the Museum of the Horse in Ruidoso. This collection of carriages, wagons, saddles, American Indian artifacts and fine art provides a historic view into the region's past. In front of it all stands the Free Spirit at Noisy Water monument of eight larger-than-life horses.
