A Sacred Valley Looking on New Mexico's Highest Peak

Angel Fire, located in a high mountain valley of the Wheeler Peak range, has a rich history. People from many different cultures shaped this area. Native Americans, Franciscan friars, miners and outlaws were just some of the varied personalities that came through here.

This valley, which is considered sacred by the Utes, looks out at New Mexico's highest peak. Wheeler Peak reaches up toward the sky at an impressive 13,161 feet.

This wilderness offers ample opportunities for a wide range of outdoor activities, including sightseeing. The breathtaking views encompassing deep canyons, pristine lakes, endless pine groves, golden aspen and crystal clear streams set the mood.

Outdoor Opportunities

Excellent fishing can be found in any number of lakes and streams. A favorite is Cimarron Canyon, 15 miles northeast of Angel Fire. The miles of enticing waters offer great trout fishing. Another popular destination is Eagle Nest Lake. The 2,200-acre lake, 11 miles to the northeast, is known for trout and salmon.

Hikers and mountain bikers will be thrilled with the number and variety of trails in this area. Everything from a gentle glide to challenging technical descents can be found. The chairlift at Angel Fire Resort takes hikers and bikers for a ride up the mountain to explore the ski trails on top.

For an adventure that won't soon be forgotten, the Rio Grande Gorge just to the west is the place. Rafting excursions through this part of the river give rafters a unique view of the landscape.

Golfers will have a chance to play one of the nation's highest 18-hole PGA rated courses. At 8,600 feet above sea level, par 72 and 6,600 yards, this course offers challenges for golfers of all abilities. The surrounding scenery provides a beautiful mountain backdrop to every shot.

Arts and Culture

Angel Fire offers an exciting array of cultural endeavors too. Artists, musicians and poets have been drawn here for more than 100 years. The wide selection of galleries, shops and restaurants has something to please everyone.

And don't forget about the special summertime events. Wings Over Angel Fire Balloon Festival, ArtFest and the Elan Music Festival are just some of the fantastic entertainment here.
