Cloudcroft
New Mexico
At the Summit of the Sacramento Mountains
Cloudcroft, at the summit of the Sacramento Mountains, is surrounded by Lincoln National Forest. It was settled when the Southern Pacific Railroad ran a spur from Alamogordo to reach the timber of the Sacramento Mountains. The lumber industry is still important to Cloudcroft's economy.
The Sacramento Mountains Historical Museum gives visitors a look at the region's past through historical buildings and furnishings.
Besides an interesting history, this area offers an array of outdoor activities, including what they say is one of the highest golf courses on the continent. Hikers, mountain bikers and fishing enthusiasts will find the area's variety of trails and steams to their liking.
Several events light up the summer months, including Mayfair and Western Roundup.
