Red River
New Mexico
Nestled in the Carson National Forest
Red River is a mountain town nestled in a narrow valley in Carson National Forest. The 1870s and 1880s brought in miners that were interested in the gold strikes in nearby Elizabethtown.
In 1895, Red River City was established as a gold camp. After the mining died down, the people who stayed decided tourism was the way to keep the town going. The area now offers a variety of recreational and cultural activities.
Fishing in these high mountain streams is excellent. They say Red River stocks more trout per year than any other public river in the country. The fishing is great for all ability levels. There are even ponds just for kids to fish. Eagle Nest Lake, 15 miles south, is known for its trout and salmon. The 2,200-acre lake affords many sporting opportunities.
Hike and Bike
With 138 miles of marked trails, hikers will find endless choices. Trek across a river, up a canyon or to a secluded mountain lake. There are trails for all abilities ranging from an easy stroll to a strenuous climb. The chairlift at Red River Ski Area takes hikers up the mountain to explore even more trails.
Mountain bikers will find an equally wide array of trails to choose from. Whether they're looking for a gentle cruise or challenging single track, they'll find it here. The Enchanted Circle and many other mountain routes offer a challenging ride and spectacular scenery. The Top of the World Mountain Bike Race and Enchanted Circle Century Bike Tour, a 100-mile ride, is held here.
Golfers visiting this area have the chance to enjoy a new course. The Red Eagle Golf Course is located on the East Moreno Ranch between Red River and Eagle Nest. This new course offers exciting challenges and breathtaking views.
A wide variety of dining choices are available ranging from elegant to casual. And the Mineshaft Theater performances will entertain and delight.
