Los Alamos
New Mexico
Santa Fe National Forest
Los Alamos is the site of the Manhattan Project, an atomic bomb research and testing program. The atomic bombs used at the end of World War II were built here.
The area also is the site of a huge volcanic crater, Valley Grande. This amazing crater covers 175 square miles, and the rim that looms above it averages 500 feet from its floor.
Located at the edge of Santa Fe National Forest, Los Alamos offers an array of recreational activities. One on the most popular is mountain biking, with the Jemez Mountain Bike Challenge and the Tour de Los Alamos bicycle races being held here.
