Las Vegas
Nevada
More Than Just Gambling
Las Vegas is a city that never sleeps, with entertainment, gambling and other fun that goes on 24 hours a day. With the appeal of easy money, the roulette wheels spin amid the famous neon lights in a whirlwind atmosphere. But the city also is being presented as a place for families to visit, featuring many activities for all to enjoy in addition to its posh hotels and casinos.
Las Vegas began as a Mormon settlement, and it became a location along the Union Pacific railroad in 1905. During the Great Depression, unemployed men worked on the construction of the Hover Dam, on the Colorado River. The hydroelectric wonder is still a point of interest today.
In 1931, gambling was legalized, and casinos have been popping up ever since. The city tried to have the reputation as being an entertainment capital, featuring some of the greatest entertainers in the world.
Fun in the Sun
Temperatures can exceed 100 F in the summer in this oasis in the middle of the desert, but that doesn't keep people from enjoying outdoor activities.
There are 31 golf courses in Las Vegas, both public and private. Many international golf tournaments are played here, including a $1 million stop on the PGA tour.
Lake Mead, the largest man-made lake in the world, is just a few minutes from Las Vegas. The 100-mile long lake offers swimming, boating, water-skiing, fishing and camping.
Red Rock Canyon, just 15 miles away, has rock climbing, camping or day hiking at the 528-acre park.
Jeep and helicopters tours are available at the city, as well as such activities as skydiving, hot air balloon rides and the Las Vegas Gran Prix.
Local Attractions
Family attractions include Paintball's Adventure Quest, Scandia Family Fun Center and UltraZone: The Ultimate Laser Adventure and the Wet 'N Wild 26-acre water park.
The city also has art galleries, countless restaurants and museums. The Liberace Museum and the Guinness World of Records museums are among Las Vegas's museum highlights. Shopping is available at the hotels and casinos and many other locations.
