The Northern Catskill Mountains are an area sometimes called the Mountaintop region. Legend has it that one of the ascents to this scenic place harbors the spot where Rip Van Winkle closed his eyes for the longest nap in history. The area has been a popular vacation destination for almost 200 years and offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities.
Catskill Park contains several camping and picnicking areas, so you can spend the day, or spend a week. Numerous trails offer ways for hikers or mountain bikers to explore this beautiful wooded landscape.

Climb the 4,000-foot peaks of these breathtaking mountains or take a spin or stroll on the scenic country roads.
Numerous streams laden with wild, brook and brown trout await fishing enthusiasts. These cool mountain waters are stocked by the state every year. Fish up to 2 feet long and 4 pounds heavy are known to lurk in these streams.
Along with the abundance of sporting activities, summer brings of variety of entertaining events and festivals. The German Alps Festival, Rockstalgia and the Country Music Festival are just a few of the exciting happenings awaiting summer visitors.
