Cortland
Located in the Scenic Finger Lakes Region

Cortland is located in the Finger Lakes region just 23 miles from Ithaca. Legend has it that the lakes were formed when "God placed his handprint on some of the most beautiful land ever created."

There are 11 lakes in all, and Seneca and Cayuga are the largest. Both are within a short drive from Cortland and offer a variety of recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, swimming and sightseeing.

Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy casting their lines in Cortland County's more than 130 miles of trout streams, with brown, rainbow and brook trout, and more than 25 lakes and ponds.

There are 30,000 acres of state forestland for hiking, bicycling and exploring in the county. And Lime Hollow Nature Center has hiking trails as well as educational exhibits.

Five public golf courses dot the region, including the Elm Tree Golf Course, Walden Oaks Country Club and Willow Brook Golf Club. Golfers can try their skills on these scenic and challenging courses.

History and Entertainment

The 1890 House Museum, a Victorian mansion, gives a look at the lifestyle of the upper class. Visitors can tour the mansion and view furnishings of the period, cherry and oak woodwork, elaborate wall stenciling and stained glass.

Cortland County Farm Museum traces the area's agricultural roots. And the Homeville Museum houses military and model railroad memorabilia.

Summer means fun and Cortland County is no different than anywhere else. It has a host of events to entertain and delight. The Cortland Downtown Sidewalk Festival, Victorian Days Festival and Heritage Weekend are only a few of the happenings in the region.
