Canandaigua
New York
The Beautiful Finger Lakes Region
Canandaigua, located in the Finger Lakes region just south of Interstate 90, has a rich history. Settled in 1789, it sits on the site of the Seneca Indian village Kan-an-dar-gue.
The village was destroyed by General John Sullivan in 1779. Several of the original buildings still remain and have been restored. History buffs can gain a wealth of information from the local Historical Society and Museum.
Here on the shores of Canandaigua Lake in the Finger Lakes region water recreation flourishes. Countless opportunities for swimming, fishing and boating exist. The 17-mile long lake is said to contain bass; pike; lake, brown and rainbow trout; and pickerel.
Thousands of acres of vineyards surround Canandaigua Lake. Many have tours and wine tastings.
Several parks in the area provide ample recreational opportunities. Kershaw Park, on the north shore of Canandaigua Lake, is an 8-acre lakefront park. Visitors can swim, fish, canoe, sailboard and picnic.
Other parks include Deep Run Park and Onanda Park. There are several hiking trails in the area, including the interpretive trails at Onanda Park.
Golfers can try their skills on the 18-hole course at Bristol Harbour Golf & Resort. This championship course on Canandaigua Lake was designed by Robert Trent Jones.
History and Culture
Area museums offer visitors a variety of experiences. The Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum was the home of Postmaster General Gideon Granger. Granger served under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The site was constructed in 1814.
The Sonnenberg Mansion & Garden Estate is a 50-acre Victorian garden estate. Visitors can tour the formal gardens, restored mansion, arboretum and greenhouse.
Events in the area offer a little something for everyone. The Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby, Concerts in the Park, the Waterfront Arts Festival and the Civil War Re-enactment at Bristol Woods Campground are just a few examples of the exciting entertainment awaiting summertime visitors.
Dining choices run the full gamut from elegant to casual, from bistros to bagels.
