Whiteface Mountain
Whiteface Mountain, three miles south, offers scenic chairlift rides for summer visitors. The chairlift climbs to the 3,600-foot summit of Little Whiteface Mountain.
If you want to go even higher, the Whiteface Mountain Veteran's Memorial Highway is a six-mile road leading to a trailhead near the summit of Whiteface Mountain.
Visitors have the unusual choice of reaching the 4,867-foot summit by taking a .2-mile hiking trail or an electric elevator set in the cone of the peak. Once at the summit house, views can be seen covering more than 100 miles, including the St. Lawrence River and Champlain and Placid lakes on a clear day.
Another favorite area attraction is High Falls Gorge. This deep ravine cut into the base of Whiteface Mountain is easily viewed from several paths and bridges. Its rapids, falls and colorful strata are well worth the trip. You don't even have to climb stairs to reach the center of the spectacular gorge.
Lake Placid
Don't forget to visit beautiful Lake Placid just south of Wilmington. See the site of the Olympic facilities used for the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games, and enjoy a host of recreational opportunities.
