Sault Ste Marie
Ontario
Sault Ste. Marie, located on the waterfront at the International Bridge that connects United States and Canada, is the gateway to a host of recreational opportunities. Here in the Algoma district, hiking and mountain biking are popular summertime sports in the majestic mountains, and the vast waterways provide for countless marine activities, including boating and fishing.
Fishing enthusiasts will find a variety of species harbored in the lakes, rivers and streams. Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, walleye, lake trout, whitefish, northern pike and others can all be snatched from these waters. The St. Mary's River is rated one of the best trout rivers in the world. Local anglers suggest that fishing on St. Mary's Rapids is best from late May through mid-June.
The World's Largest Game Preserve
The Algoma district is also home to the world's largest game preserve. The Chapleau Game Preserve encompasses more than 3,000 square miles. Located between the Hudson Bay and Lake Superior, the land was first set aside in 1925 to protect indigenous wildlife. Fauna include moose, timber wolves, black bear, mink, marten, lynx, otter, bald eagles and herons, totaling 119 species of birds and 40 species of mammals. Fishing is allowed on the numerous lake and rivers within the preserve.
A scenic train ride north to Agawa Canyon Park offers a host of opportunities. Travel through the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest region and the granite rock formations of the Canadian Shield. Visitors can see several waterfalls, including the spectacular, 225-foot Bridal Veil Falls.
Once at the park a variety of activities await. Several trails are available for exploring the countryside where one can hike by trout ponds, waterfalls and beaver dams. Routes include Otter Creek, Ed Foote, the Talus, the River and the Lookout trails.
Golfers will find a number of courses in the area to test their skills. The Maplewood Golf Course, Root River Golf Course and Livingstone Creek Golf Course are just a few of the scenic courses found here.
Fort St. Joseph and the Sault Ste. Marie Canal offer visitors a look back to the early fur trading days, the North-West Company, Great Lakes shipping and Canadian engineering technology. Both are national historic sites.
A variety of entertaining events light up the summer months. Canada Day Celebrations, the Salmon Derby & Festival and the International Bridge Walk are just a few of the exciting happenings Sault Ste. Marie has to offer visitors.
