A Mountain of Opportunities

Ashland, just north of the Rouge River National Forest, has a short-lived history as a gold mining town. After the gold came the timber but in the end all attention turned to the outdoors. Here in the foothills of the Siskiyou Mountains are the ample opportunities for recreational endeavors.

Outdoor Adventures

Numerous lakes and streams in the area offer a variety of activities. Rafting, kayaking and jet boating on the Rogue and Klamath rivers give visitors an exciting view. Float slowly downstream and relax, or go thrill seeking in the rapids.

Emigrant Lake offers swimming, camping, boating, sailing and windsurfing. Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy the region's challenging waters. Salmon, steelhead and trout can be found in these mountain lakes and streams.

Hikers and mountain bikers will enjoy the endless selection of trails. Easy strolls or strenuous climbs offer something for all abilities. Some favorites are the Rogue River Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail in the Mt. Ashland area. The network of forest roads provides many miles of riding and hiking. Lithia Park, 100 acres of recreational enjoyment, has many trails as well.

The region offers several golf courses, including the Eagle Point Golf Course, which was designed by Robert Trent Jones II, and the Oak Knoll Golf Course.

Orchards and vineyards dot the landscape. Several of the area wineries have tours and tastings.

Arts and Culture

In the midst of this beautiful landscape, cultural interests abound as well. The area is filled with music, dance, theater and opera performances. Galleries show everything from contemporary art to unique crafts to jewelry. Museums include the Schneider Art Museum and the Pacific Northwest Museum of Natural History.

A number of events light up the summer, including the world famous and Tony award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It is one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere.

An excellent range of choices for dining exists. Everything from casual to elegant, domestic to foreign cuisine can be found. And a wide variety of unique shops and boutiques entice visitors.
