Sisters
Oregon
"Gateway to the Cascades"
Sisters, established in 1901, was a supply station for sheepherders for many years. The settlement was originally three miles to the northeast and called Camp Polk, a short-lived military camp and then a homestead site.
In 1888, the post office moved to the John M. Smith store near the current site. It was named Three Sisters, but postal authorities shortened the name to Sisters. The town still retains the look of the 1880s with its old-style buildings.
Recreational Paradise
Located just east of the Cascade Mountains in the beautiful Deschutes National Forest, Sisters has a prime location for recreational enjoyment. Ponderosa pines and crystal clear streams soothe and relax. Sometimes called the "Gateway to the Cascades," Sisters' warm dry days and cool nights in summer offer the perfect weather for a wide range of activities.
Golfers will find a variety of scenic and challenging courses. Ten miles to the west is Black Butte Ranch. The ranch's two 18-hole courses each provide their own unique challenges. The Big Meadow course affords spectacular views of Black Butte and the Cascades, and the Glaze Meadow course is said to be a "tight, challenging 18-hole layout."
Another great golfing facility is Aspen Lakes, just east of Sisters. Golfers will find three 9-hole courses providing 27 holes of "eco-golf." The courses are named after the Three Sisters Mountains and were the first in Oregon to be accepted into the Audubon International Signature Program.
Fishermen of all skill levels will enjoy fly-fishing on the Metolius River. Rainbow trout, bull trout and Kokanee salmon can be found lurking in these waters.
Hikers will find numerous opportunities here. The Three Sisters Wilderness has miles of trails winding through fields of wildflowers and past alpine lakes.
Entertainment and Arts
Along with fantastic weather and scenery, Sisters affords visitors with a variety of entertainment. The Sisters Rodeo and Parade, Sisters Quilt Show and the Antique Festival are just a sampling of the events this town offers visitors.
Unique boutiques provide a wide array of shopping opportunities and art galleries show works by artists working in everything from glass to wood to paints.
