Rich in History

Most people think of Lancaster County but you will find the same flavor in Berks and Lebanon Counties. Harrisburg, the state capital can be found in Dauphin County and you will find HersheyPark there as well, Gettysburg is in Adams County and lots of history and outdoors action can be found in Cumberland and Franklin Counties.

York County is an exciting array of historical sites, museums, unique boutiques and cultural richness. Located just off Interstate 83 in south central Pennsylvania, York County also is home to seven county parks and three state parks offering a variety of recreational endeavors, including hiking, fishing and boating.

Fun in the Sun

Codorus State Park includes 26 miles of shoreline on Lake Marburg and one of the country's largest swimming pools, holding more than 700,000 gallons of water.

Kain County Park offers canoeing and bicycling, even in the moonlight. Bikers can ride on the York County Heritage Rail/Trail. Boaters will find several lakes, streams and rivers to enjoy, including the Susquehanna River.

The county has 18 public and private golf courses to choose from. Briarwood Golf Club, Cool Creek Country Club, Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Honey Run Golf Course are just some of the courses that offer golfers a variety of challenges and layouts.

History at Its Best

In the city of York, more than half the downtown buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. Its fascinating history includes some key events of our nation.

When the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia in September 1777 to escape advancing British troops, they found refuge in York. They adopted the Articles of Confederation in York in November of the same year. This is what bound the original 13 colonies together before they became the United States of America.

A walking tour of the countless structures and stories that tell of the past will take visitors back hundreds of years.

The Harley-Davidson factory and museum is in York County as well. The museum includes almost 40 vintage Harleys, the oldest made in 1906. Tours of the factory, which draws 85,000 visitors a year, also are available. See the final assembly of these famous motorcycles. Production averages 140 bikes a day.

Summertime in York County is filled with events to entertain and delight visitors and residents alike. The Annual Invasion of NASCAR to Center City York, The Annual Open House and Strawberry Festival, the Summer Concert Series and the Riverwalk Arts Festival are just of sampling of what the county has to offer.

Harrisburg, in Dauphin County, is the state capital. Both Lancaster and York were, at one time, capitols of the United States. Reading, (Berks County), is known as the outlet capitol of the world. Babe Ruth started his baseball career on a ball field near Cornwall in Lebanon. Chambersburg, in Franklin County, was the fartherst north Robert E. Lee got with his Confederate army which was beaten at Gettysburg in Adams County, July 1-3, 1863.
