President James Buchanan's Birthplace
Mercersburg is located in south central Pennsylvania. Buchanan's Birthplace State Park and Cowans Gap State Park are only a few miles away and offer a variety of recreational opportunities.
Buchanan's Birthplace State Park, only a mile northwest of town, encompasses 18 acres and has a stone monument marking James Buchanan's birthplace. Buchanan was the only Pennsylvanian to become president of the United States. The park also offers fishing and picnicking areas.
A wide array of activities can be found a little farther up the road at Cowans Gap State Park. Fishing, swimming, hiking, boating, camping and picnicking can all be enjoyed here.
The Mercersburg Academy has some attractions of its own. This secondary school also is the site of President Buchanan's 1791 birthplace log cabin, which has been moved. The McFadden Railroad Museum is located here as well. The museum contains Lionel trains and accessories totaling 148 engines and more than 500 cars.
