Mountains and Lakes
Magog's name came from lac Memphremagog, which was named for an Abenaki Indian word meaning "vast expanse of water." British Loyalists founded the town in 1799 when they left the United States after the Revolutionary War.
This popular resort area has plenty of offer. Mountains, streams and lac Memphremagog all provide countless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Visitors can fish, waterski, parasail, canoe, kayak, windsurf and pedalboat. Fabulous mountain hiking and cycling trails offer breathtaking views of nature's beauty.
Hikers will enjoy the nearby Ile-du-Marais Nature Trail. A hike around this island may reveal some of the 226 species of birds that nest here.
Another popular spot is Mont-Orford Provincial Park. The site of several ski slopes, the mountain reaches 2,795 feet. Numerous trails are waiting to be explored. The park is also a center for the arts, offering plays, films, art exhibits and performances by well-known artists at the Centre d' Arts Orford.
