Utah's Highest Town

Brian Head is Utah's highest town. The name was originally given to the area's highest peak, reaching 11,307 feet. It is speculated that the name was chosen either by John Wesley Powell in honor of a United States Geological Survey official named Bryan or by University of Utah teacher Marion Adams Gudmudsen in honor of Williams Jennings Bryan.

Brian Head is located in Iron County, the "Gateway to the National Parks." The area has unique terrain, including rock cliffs that were formed 30 million years ago by volcanic activity. This rocky landscape is not the only one, however. Thick conifers and 150 species of wildflowers blanket alpine countryside.

Iron County gained its nickname because of its close proximity to so many parks and recreation areas. Bryce Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef, Grand Canyon North Rim and Great Basin national parks are within reach, as are Lake Powell, Dixie National Forest, several state parks and historic sites.

Pedal to Your Hearts Content

All this wide-open space provides countless opportunities for recreational endeavors. Mountain bikers will enjoy what has been called, "Utah's fat-tire paradise."

Brian Head and the surrounding area offer riders an unusual combination of terrain that makes for great backcountry experiences. More than 120 miles of single-track trails, countless miles of double-track, pioneer trails and forest roads create an amazing network.

Routes go from the base of the plateau to the top of the mountain and down again. Shuttle services will take riders up hill, so they can enjoy the incredible descents - one of more than a vertical mile. Steam Engine Meadow and the ridge just below Brian Head Peak are well-known beginning locations. Trails range in difficulty from easy to strenuous.

If you really want to know how big cycling is in this region, take into account that the small town of Brian Head, population 95, can support three bicycle shops.

Golfers can enjoy an 18-hole challenge in the foothills of nearby Cedar City. The Cedar Ridge Golf Course offers a wonderful backdrop of some of nature's best creations.
