Between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks
Moab, situated between Arches and Canyonlands national parks, overlooks the Colorado River.
In the 1950s uranium was discovered and Moab turned into a mining center. The town was the scene of several of Zane Grey's novels and used as a setting for many movies. Today, tourism is the town's primary industry.
A Biker's Paradise
This region is a recreational paradise. Unbelievable vistas of this natural wonderland provide the backdrop for some of the best mountain biking in the country. The Moab Slickrock Bike Trail is known as one the country's superior mountain bike trails. This is just one of many trails here that mix challenging riding with spectacular scenery.
Trails offer something for all abilities ranging form technical and strenuous, such as the Slickrock Trail, to gentle and relaxing. Some other popular rides include Gemini Bridge Trail, a pair of natural rock spans; Hurrah Pass Trail, with great views of the Colorado River and petroglyphs; and Monitor/Merrimac Trail, which offers close-up views of the buttes bearing the same names.
Hiking and More
Arches National Park harbors the largest concentration of sandstone arches in the world -- more than 2,000. There are many hiking trails, and mountain biking is allowed, but only on the roads.
The hiking trails in the Moab region are too numerous to count. There is a trail to suit hikers of all levels. If you want to stay close to town, check out the Hidden Valley and Moab Rim Trails. These are perfect for an early morning or evening stroll. For a good look at some of what the area is famous for, take a walk on the Corona Arch Trail. This trail affords great views of Corona Arch, with its 140-foot by 105-foot opening; the adjacent Bow Tie Arch; the Colorado River; and a large slickrock canyon.
Rafting and other water activities are big here as well and there is an abundance of opportunities. The region is known for its white water float trips, but other boating adventures are available, such as canoeing and jet boating. It you're looking for easy accessibility, the Colorado, Green and San Juan rivers can abide. If you're looking for a wilderness setting, try Cataract and Desolation-Gray canyons.
There also are numerous chances for fishing and camping in this region.
The summer brings on a myriad of events as well, including Air Affair Air Show, Moab Arts Festival, the Annual Chuckwagon Jamboree and the Moab Music Festival.
